NAACP Historical Background

The primary focus of the NAACP continues to be the protection and enhancement of the civil rights of African Americans and other minorities.  Membership, the lifeblood of the Association, is open to anyone believing in the basic tenets of the NAACP.  More than 20 years ago, the NAACP embarked upon a program strategy focusing on the private sector as a foundation for economic advancement for African American.  There are more than 12,000,000 registered African American voters.  Believing that a “vote less people is a hopeless people,” the NAACP voter empowerment efforts work tirelessly to achieve full empowerment for African Americans.

 

Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch

The Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP is committed to the promotion of theatre in Southern California and to providing a viable program for performers and supporters of this art form.  To those pioneers who laid the foundation, those trailblazers who continue to recreate and invigorate theatre, and those performers who bring theatre to life, the Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP is very grateful.

 

Mission Statement

The Beverly Hills/Hollywood branch is called the “Keeper Of The Image” for its efforts to salute and support the positive images of African Americans in the Entertainment Industry as well as individuals and companies who contribute to the positive achievements for the African American community through the industry.

 

Milestones

 

1962      Beverly Hills/Hollywood Branch of the National Association for  the Advancement of Colored People has one of the most active memberships in the NAACP.  The branch was started to service the Beverly Hills and Hollywood communities in the continued struggle for human rights for all Americans.

 

 

1977        Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (“ACT-SO”) competition held for students throughout the country.  Originated by Chicago Columnist Vernon Jarrett, thereafter introduced to the NAACP.  Sponsored by NAACP, the competitions are held the finals during their Annual NAACP’s National Convention.

 

 

1986        Medger Evers Community Service Awards designed to honor community heroes who deserve recognition for their tireless efforts.  Awards also given to the National figures who promotes positive images.

 

 

1987        Beverly Hills/Hollywood Theatre Awards was created to acknowledge and award thespians and other community leaders who have made significant contributions to Black Theatre.

 

 

1987    Job Bank provides listings of available positions with a variety of companies.  The branch also has cross-referencing listings of qualified individuals and their skills for companies seeking to locate applicants.

 

1994        Thanksgiving and Christmas Basket Projects – funded through a grant, fifty families benefit.

 

1994        Affirmative Action Town Hall meeting with a purpose to address the arguments for the Affirmative Action and confronting the California Civil Rights Initiative.

 

1999        Black Hollywood Reunion was hosted in conjunction with 20th Century Fox which brought together celebrity guests for yester year from the film, television and music genre; specifically designed for all NAACP members to meet their favorite stars.

 

2000        People of Color In The Media a community forum as part of the NAACP California State Conference.  The purpose was to provide was to provide a platform for the community, members of the industry, and the media to discuss the issues and their concerns about the lack of POC in the Media.

 

2001    African American Male Forum – address the crisis facing young males.  Topics include rites of passage, business, education and healthcare.

 

2001        The Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP recognized throughout the country as one of the most active and visible NAACP branches in the country.

 

2001    The Beverly Hills/Hollywood NAACP Theatre Awards attendance has increased dramatically over 500 celebrity guests and well wishers.
